"We halted at this fence, quickly tore it down, and piled the rails in front. It offered us good protection. The Federals were in a gully, or branch, about 100 yards distant. We opened fire on them, but it soon became dark, that we could not see their position, but could only fire at the flashes of their guns, as I suppose they would fire at ours."
