Acadian Village

The Acadian Village contains original and recreated buildings of 19th century Cajun life. Seven of the buildings in the Acadian Village, including the Bernard and Billeaud houses, are original structures, dating from 1800 on. Inside the houses and businesses are artifacts of Cajun life, including looms, furniture and sundry items. The majority of the houses were built using the traditional “bousillage entre poteaux” method, and are constructed of cypress, the signature material of Cajun architecture.

The Cajuns were French settlers who were thrown out of Canada during the French and Indian War. They are an indigenous minority of America, and the Lafayette area is the the center of Cajun culture.
