Austin F. Williams House and Carriage House - ASD

This private home belonged to Austin F. Williams (1805-1885), who was an ardent abolitionist who helped both the Amistad captives and students from the American School for the Deaf. Williams built the carriage house on this property as a residence for the captives while they awaited resolution to their trials. Williams also provided farmland for ASD and students would travel to the farm to help harvest produce for the school. It is likely that in the 1840s while the Mende Africans stayed at this home that the two groups met.
