The Ballard House

The Ballard House

This wooden home was built in the early part of the 18th century and it is quite remarkable that it still stands today.   It was built sometime between 1706 and 1709 and it was acquired by John Ballard, a prominent merchant of Yorktown, in 1721.  Ballard Street,  that goes around the village of Yorktown, is named after him. The Ballard family owned this home until 1761.  During the 1781 siege of Yorktown, the British built earthworks through the yard of this house and you can still see the remains of them to the left of the home today.
