Manuel Barrios Cottage

Originally located at 524 East Zaragossa Street, this Gulf Coast style cottage is named after one of its earliest residents, Manuel Barrios. Of Creole, or mixed-race ancestry, Barrio was a barber in town who resided in the house with Elizabeth Washington.

Built during the 1880s, the Barrios Cottage is typical of Gulf Coast architecture of the period, with a hipped-roof, wood framing and clapboard siding. The house is constructed on brick piers, which increased air circulation during Florida's hot summer months and protected against flooding. In 1987, the Barrios Cottage was saved from demolition when the Historic Pensacola Preservation Board moved the structure from its original site to its current location in Historic Pensacola Village.

Originally a small two-room structure, today this 1880 cottage contains a single room with an exhibit about Pensacola Life in the 1920's. The exhibit includes kitchen and living room vignettes that illustrate major changes in daily life wrought by the incorporation of electricity into the family home.
