Battery Trueman

Constructed in 1905 as part of the coastal defense project that started before the Spanish American War, Battery Trueman's position is of strategic importance.

Located on the northwestern edge of the island, the battery protected the minefield at the entrance to the bay with its two 3-inch rapid-fire pedestal mounted guns.

The battery is named for Major Alexander Trueman who died as a result of wounds near Ft. Recovery, Ohio, in June 1792. Battery Trueman was relocated to old Battery Cullum in 1943, and disarmed in 1946 when the War Department determined the fortification was surplus to national defense needs.
