Between the Wars

“Fort Adams . . . often was dubbed the country club of the army, especially by those officers and enlisted men who were assigned to it after duty in foreign areas. And its peacetime background was dotted with stories of high society and Army brass entertaining.”

      - Harold Wade, Boston Globe, September 3, 1956

The Soldiers lived a fairly easy and complacent life while the officers could look forward to having their official duties accomplished by noon time.

During the 1930s, Fort Adams even boasted a hostess, Mrs. Crawford “Maudie” Allen, who arranged social events such as movie nights, weekly dances for the enlisted men, and holiday parties.
