Birthplace of General Maxcy Gregg
Maxcy Gregg, Confederate General and leader
in Southern Rights Movement, was born Aug. 1,
1815 in a house on this site. Member of committee
which framed the ordinance of secession, Dec. 1860;
Colonel 1st Regiment South Carolina Volunteers;
Brigadier General in 1861. Mortally wounded at
Fredericksburg Dec. 13, 1862; died two days later.
Marker is on Senate Street, on the right when traveling east.
