Bldg. 50, UWF History
Occupied in 1969, Building 50 belonged to a group of buildings (50, 51, 52, and 53) that were the first to be designed for a particular discipline and faculty--those making up the initial Alpha and Gamma Colleges (see University of West Florida). The two distinct sets of buildings were designed by John E. Jarvis, Jr.
The group of buildings recalls the shallow-arch of Fort Pickens on Pensacola Beach: first in the base-foundation of the classroom/lecture Building 51 and then in the roof line of the faculty office Building 50, which allows a vaulted ceiling on the second floor.
Today, Building 50 is the home of the departments of English and Foreign Languages, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Government.
