Carl B. Stokes

1927-1996

First African American mayor of a major metropolitan area from 1967-1971 after serving in the Ohio House for six years. Elected municipal judge in 1983, appointed U.S. ambassador to the Republic of the Seychelles in 1994, first black anchor to broadcast television news in New York City for WNBC-TV.
