Cathedral Basilica

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is home to the oldest Catholic parish in the United States. Parish records date back to at least 1596; any earlier records would have been destroyed by fire in 1586, when Sir Francis Drake pillaged the city of St. Augustine. The first parish church was located at the southeastern corner of today's Plaza. The present-day Basilica is the parish's oldest existing structure. It was completed in 1797 after four years of construction, with additions in 1888 and 1965.
