Ciriaco Lopez

Ciriaco Lopez 1780-1861

Ciriaco Lopez was born on May 15th, 1794, in Florida. He married a woman fourteen years his junior, Dona Feliciana Ysidra de Madrid, and she gave him a son, Heraldo.

Lopez was active in local politics. He signed a plea to Congress persuading them to prevent Alabama from annexing West Florida on December 29th, 1821. He also signed an 1832 petitition promoting James Gadsen for Florida governor, and he shows up on the voter registration roster of 1845.

He died at the age of 80 on March 8th, 1861, and is buried along with his wife. Their marble grave marker depicts a cross with a wreath around it. While the cross symbolizes Christianity and resurrection, the wreath can represent eternity and immortality.
