City of Salisbury

Settled by Scotch-Irish in 1747,

coming from Pennsylvania along the

“Great Wagon Road”. Established as the

county seat in 1753. Named after the

cathedral town (New Sarum) in England.

Largest city in western North Carolina

in the 18th and 19th centuries. Also

served as major center for trade and

politics during this period.
