Council Grove National Bank Building

1887

The Council Grove National Bank began August 23, 1878, as the Morris County State Bank of Kansas. It became a national bank in 1900.

An 1886 fire destroyed the bank, then located between the Hays House and this building. Constructed in 1887 at a cost of $15,000.00, this building served the bank until a 1978 fire damaged it. The main lobby was restored in 1978-79 to an appearance reminiscent of 1887.

Entered in the National Register of Historic Places on June 3, 1976.

Marker is at the intersection of Main Street (U.S. 56) and Neosho Street (Kansas Route 177), on the right when traveling west on Main Street.
