Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, located on the banks of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida, was founded in 1958 and formally opened to the public in 1961. Its creation was due to the bequest of Mrs. Nanah M. H. Cummer, a prominent resident and patron of the arts. The Museum houses the broadest collection of art in Northeast Florida, encompassing a chronological span from approximately 2000 B.C. through the Twentieth Century, with representations from every significant historical and aesthetic period. Built of the site of the original Cummer home, the Museum maintains Mrs. Cummer's formal English and Italian gardens created by her in 1910 and 1931. Visitors experience a representative survey of the history of art: Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities; art of the Middle Ages; early Renaissance through Mannerish; the Baroque period; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries; and American Impressionism and Twentieth Century.
