Delaware and Raritan Canal

1830 – 1935

The State Street Locks were located here. The canal was 42.9 miles long and there were 14 locks between Bordentown and New Brunswick via Bound Brook. The feeder extended 21.6 miles from Raven Rock. The main stream was 75 feet wide and 8 feet deep. The company, incorporated in 1830, opened the waterway on June 26, 1834. Maximum freight traffic in 1866 was 2,857,244 tons (chiefly coal going to New York Harbor).

Marker is at the intersection of Armory Drive (Barry Hogan Way) and East State Street, on the right when traveling north on Armory Drive (Barry Hogan Way).
