Dorothy Madden Hobson Luther

Naturalist and Ornithologist

This 11.8 acre tract was the homesite of Dorothy and Frederic. It is a gift to Shades State Park in her memory by the Estate of Frederic Luther.

Dorothy Madden Hobson, 1905-1999, a native of Parke County, Indiana, was Chief Naturalist at Turkey Run State Park and served as a Naturalist-Guide at Clifty Falls State Park and at McCormick's Creek State Park in the 1940s.

She spent the summers of 1947-1950 studying tropical birds in Central America. In 1950 she was the first woman elected President of the Indiana State Audubon Society. A graduate of Butler University, and Columbia University, she also studied ornithology at Cornell University. She taught for thirty years at George Washington High School in Indianapolis.

Marker is on Indiana Route 234, on the right when traveling south.
