“Drowned Lands”
Black dirt formed 12,000 yrs. ago in a glacial lake. Hearty farmers drained the swamp by hand. Their work made “Pine Island” the top onion area for the past 50 years.
Marker is on Pine Island Turnpike (County Route 1) 0.1 miles west of Pulaski Highway (County Route 6), on the right.
