Elizabeth Timothy

in 1738, became the first woman newspaper publisher in America when she took control over publication of the

South Carolina Gazette

upon the death of her husband, Lewis Timothy. She continued to publish the paper until 1746 when her son, Peter Timothy, came of age and succeeded her.

This plaque in her honor was erected March 14, 1981, by the Lowcountry chapter, Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi.

Marker is on Vendue Range Street east of East Bay Street.
