This monument marks the site of

Fort Le Boeuf

Erected by the French in 1752.

George Washington

As a major representing the governor

of Virginia, came here in 1753, bearing

a letter to the commander of the

fort, warning the French to withdraw

their forces from this region

claimed by Great Britain.

This mission was one of the first links

in the chain of events that settled

forever the dominance of our land

by the Anglo Saxon.

Marker is on High Street (U.S. 19) north of West 1st Alley, on the right when traveling south.
