Fort Michilimackinac

Fort Michilimackinac is located at the top of the hill overlooking the harbor, keeping a watchful eye on and forming the focal point of the main downtown area. Built in 1715 as a supply and trading outpost for French fur traders in Ojibwe Indian territory, the fort was ceded to the British after the French defeat in the French and Indian War. In 1763, the Ojibwe invaded as part of Pontiac's Rebellion. After a year, the British retook the fort and renegotiated treaties with the remaining French occupants and Ojibwe residents.

The fort has been moved several times over its history, but the final location is the most formidable and is well preserved since it became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The site today relates its rich history through demonstrations and living history interpreters. (Lindsay Mahalak, Flagler College)
