He wrote

"The Star Spangled Banner"

while being detained by the British admiral under a flag of truce during the bombardment of Fort McHenry Baltimore, Maryland, by the British fleet on September 13 and the early morning of September 14, 1814.

"Tis the Star-Spangled Banner, o long may it wave

over the land of the free & the home of the brave."

Marker is on Old Airport Road (North Carolina Route 1547) east of Henderson Road (U.S. 25), on the left when traveling east.
