Georgetown

Site of town purchased May 9, 1791 from Abraham Harris, Rowland Bevins,and Joshua Pepper, and laid out for county-seat of Sussex County in accordance with Act of General Assembly of January 29, 1791. Named

Georgetown in honor of George Mitchell, for several sessions Speaker of State Senate and prominent member of commission appointed to lay out the town. Home of Governor Charles C. Stockley.

Marker is on East market Street (State Route 404) (U.S. 9), on the right when traveling west.
