Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company Site

On January 24, 1935, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company produced the very first can of beer in America.

Gottfried Krueger immigrated to America from Germany in 1853 eventually opening his own brewery at age 27.

Eventually called the Krueger Brewing Co, the enterprise quickly grew in popularity absorbing smaller breweries up until Gottfried Krueger's death in 1926.

Despite losing the patriarch of the business, the corporation survived the lean times during prohibition, emerging as a major player in the beer market during the early 1930s.

It was during this time that the company began experimenting with the canning process, eventually releasing canned beer for the first time to the public in 1935. Canned beer now makes up over half of the total beer sales in America.

The brewery located at 75 Belmont street was closed in 1961 after over 100 years of operation.
