Grace Church

Grace Church

This church, in York-Hampton Parish, is the oldest in Yorktown. It has been active since its construction about 1697.  Much of the church was destroyed in the great fire of 1814.  The present structure incorporated much of the original native marl walls which survived the fire.  This church was used for various military purposes in the two wars that engulfed Yorktown, but parish organization has continued unbroken and services are held regularly. In its churchyard lie the remains of prominent men of Yorktown, including Thomas Nelson Jr a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and of many others less well known.
