Hancock County, Indiana

Hancock County created 1828. Named for first signer of Declaration of Independence. Agricultural County, near center of Hoosier State. First settled 1818 in Blue River Township. Greenfield chosen County Seat in 1829. “Green Fields” inviting to weary travelers. Old National Road, main artery of pioneer travel, constructed through Hancock in 1835.

Early industries: grist and saw mills, tanneries, flax factories. 1890, Era of gas boom: glass factories flourished: nor gone. Present Court House, the Fourth, completed 1898.

Townships: Blue River, Brandywine, Brown, Buck Creek, Center, Green, Jackson, Sugar Creed, and Vernon.
