Founded in 1883
as a Christian College
for Negro women
by Joseph C. Hartshorn,
of Rhode Island,
in memory of his wife,
Rachel Thurber.
Lyman Beecher Tefft, A.M., D.D.
first president of the college
1883-1912
united in 1931 with
Virginia Union University.
This memorial marker is given
by the Alumnae Association and friends.
Marker is at the intersection of North Lombardy Street and West Leigh Street, on the left when traveling north on North Lombardy Street.
