Hashems Nuts and Coffee Gallery

Hashems Nuts and Coffee sells produce and dry goods imported from Lebanon, exemplifying Dearborn Arabs' connection to their culinary heritage. Hashems is the only store on Warren Ave. that imports vegetable seeds and Arab greens, such as mulyukhiya (similar to okra), from Lebanon. The store also sells Turkish coffee, which is typically consumed using special preparation and serving rituals.

Abu Ali Sheik Theeb, the grandfather of the owners of this Hashems location, first opened a Hashems Nuts and Coffee in 1959 in a village in Southern Lebanon. In Dearborn, Theeb’s descendants continue his legacy of providing quality Lebanese produce and dry goods to the community.

The products sold at Hashems are important for Dearborn Arabs because they play a central role in maintaining traditions of hospitality. In Arab homes, both locally and abroad, hospitality is vital. Guests will be served tea, coffee, water, juice, or sometimes all of the above, as well as sweets. It is a welcoming sign that is indiscriminant. Whether you are a friend, family, client, or neighbor, the act of serving guests is imperative.

Hashems Nuts and Coffee also fits into the tradition of food vending among Arab immigrants in America. Historically, immigrants from the Arab world tended to gravitate toward food-related businesses. Fruit stands were an especially popular form of store ownership and Arab immigrants opened fruit stands all around Detroit. From a fruit stand, it was an easy transition to grocery store and then specialty stores like Hashems.
