Henry Gerber House

This house is nationally significant as the earliest known site associated with the gay and lesbian civil rights movement in the United States. It was the home of pioneering activist Henry Gerber from 1924 to 1925, during which time he organized the Society for Human Rights, the nation’s first gay civil-rights organization. The house was the location of Society meetings and the place where Gerber write at least the first of the two issues published of “Friendship and Freedom,” the first-documented gay periodical in America.
