Hillel Foundation (University of Florida)
Hillel Houses provide a focus for Jewish social, cultural, and religious life on campuses throughout the nation. Founded in 1937 as the first Hillel in Florida, the present building was dedicated in 1952. This Hillel became a center not only for Jewish students but also for Jewish faculty and for the community at large. B'nai Israel Congregation, which had outgrown its small synagogue, used this building for religious school classes and other activities. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Buns, who operated the Buns Shul synagogue during the 1920s and 1930s, donated the Torah scroll at Hillel.
