Independence Hall

Independence Hall served as the meeting location for some of the United States' most groundbreaking historical events, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence and drafting of the United States Constitution.

Notable figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams, attended proceedings in Independence Hall as they worked along with their fellow patriots to shape the future of the thirteen colonies.

The Declaration and the Constitution proved to be significant milestones that signified the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation, and marked the first time that a colony successfully severed ties with its mother country.

Because of the unprecedented nature of these actions, the drafting and ratifying of these documents sparked heated debates among the nation's founding fathers. This hall is where the legendary debates concerning independence, civil liberties, slavery, and representation took place.

It is also believed to be the place at which Benjamin Franklin first uttered his famous warning, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

Currently the Centennial Bell resides in the bell tower of Independence hall. The building hosted the original Liberty Bell before its relocation to Liberty Bell Pavilion across the street from the hall as part of Philadelphia's Independence National Historical Park.

Films such as National Treasure and the musical 1776 feature Independence Hall due to the widely held perception of the site as the "birthplace" of American independence.
