The Isthmus

The Isthmus

The Jamestown Island Isthmus provides theunique spatial experience of traversing a narrow spit of land with water on both sides. Once the Parkway crosses the Isthmus Bridge it enters the Jamestown Visitor Center parking lot and again becomes enclosed by the surrounding vegetation.

This modern road crosses to Jamestown about on line with a natural isthmus which existed in colonial times. The sandy strip that made Jamestown a "sandy-island" was washed away in the 1700's.
