Jefferson County

Formed in 1801 from Berkeley. Named for Thomas Jefferson. Home of Generals Gates, Drake, and Charles Lee. Here four companies of Washington’s men organized. Shepherdstown was strongly urged as a seat of the National Capital.

(West Facing Side): State of Virginia

Named for Queen Elizabeth the Virgin Queen of England. Site of the first permanent English settlement in America, 1607. One of the 13 original colonies. The Old Dominion is the birthplace of eight United States Presidents.

Marker is at the intersection of Charles Town Road (West Virginia Route 9) and Appalachian Trail, on the left when traveling west on Charles Town Road.
