Joe Louis Arena, nicknamed “The Joe,” is the home of the Detroit Red Wings as well as a venue for many concerts and shows. Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979 and replaced Detroit’s former home of Olympia Stadium.

Joe Louis Arena is named after former boxer and heavy weight champion Joe Louis who grew up in the Detroit Area. Joe Louis Arena is one of only three arenas in the NHL that doesn't have a corporate naming sponsor.

The Red Wings played their first game at The Joe on December 27, 1979. Joe Louis Arena hosted the 32nd All-Star Game later that season in front of a then record crowd of 21,002. Since playing at The Joe, the Red Wings have won four Stanley Cup® Championships (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008), and have clinched the Playoffs in 23 consecutive seasons, the longest active streak in North American professional sports.
