Lake City-Columbia County Historical Museum

This museum is housed in the restored c.1870 May Vinzant Perkins House. The house was the postwar residence of John Vinzant who served as a sergeant in the 1st Florida Cavalry which fought in the western theater. At the Third Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee in December 1864, Vinzant was so badly wounded that his right leg had to be amputated and he later spent several months as a prisoner of war at a Union camp at Louisville, Kentucky. After the war, Vinzant returned to Lake City and served as the Columbia County Clerk of the Circuit Court and County Tax Collector. In 1983, the house was acquired by the Historic Preservation Board of Lake City and Columbia County Inc. and the Blue-Grey Army Inc. to serve as their headquarters and as a museum of local history. The museum features Civil War uniforms, weapons, and other period artifacts and contains a research library relating to the history of Lake City.
