Mark Hopkins

1815 - 1878

Some 350 tons of Rocky Mountain Red Granite form the sarchophas that entombs the remains this Forty-Niner who ultimately became one of the “Big Four” in railroad history and Treasurer of the Central Pacific Railroad Company. This monstrous vault took a year and a half in construction and was completed in 1880 at a cost in excess of $80,000.

Marker can be reached from Broadway, on the right when traveling west.
