Martha Gonzalez

Martha Gonzalez 1841-1873

Very little is know about Martha Bruce Gonzalez, due to the fact that she left virtually no trace in the historical record. She was born on December 28th, 1841, in Greensboro, Alabama. She married Charles B. Gonzalez. She died in Pensacola on June 15th, 1873, at the age of 32. She is buried underneath a plain white tombstone proclaiming this information but completely devoid of symbols, with an equally plain footstone displaying her initials.

Immediately adjacent to her is another gravestone bearing the name of Maggie Gonzalez, her daughter. Although largely similar, her daughter's marker is engraved with clasped hands, a symbol of mourning implying a close kinship. Unfortunately, the rest of the many engravings are unreadable. These two graves are set slightly apart from the rest on an edge of the generally quite crowded cemetery. Although not proof, this implies that the succeeding generations may have also respected their closeness.
