Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthplace
In 1929, this modest frame vernacular house was the home of Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and his wife Alberta Williams King. At this time Reverend King was serving as associate minister of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in support of his father-in-law.
On January 15, 1929 the King family welcomed their second child, Martin Luther King, Jr.into the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. spent the first years of his life in this home not far from where his father preached.
Martin Luther King, Sr. was an early leader in the civil rights movement, advocate for social equality and organizer of the local NAACP chapter, all passions that he passed on to his son.
The younger King served as the associate pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church for eight years under the guidance of his father until accepting a position at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery Alabama.
The house is now part of the Martin Luther king, Jr. National Historic District.
