Mattaponi Indians

Two miles east is the Mattaponi Indian reservation, home of descendants of the great chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas. The reservation is situated on the Mattaponi River and is one of the oldest Indian reservations in the United States, existing since 1658. The Mattaponi tribe is governed by its chief and council and continues to exercise its laws and traditional customs.

Marker is at the intersection of King William Road (Virginia Route 30) and Wakema Road (Virginia Route 640), on the left when traveling east on King William Road.
