From the mid-18th century until the Civil War, Alexandria was the principal seaport and the commercial center of northern Virginia. The District contains significant examples of Colonial and Federal urban architecture. Interspersed among rows of modest houses are more imposing mansions, and colonial churches and meetinghouses set in graveyards provide variety to the streetscape. Several buildings within the district are listed individually as National Historic Landmarks.
