National Historic Landmark - Colonial Niagara Historic District

On Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River, the site was developed by the French (1726), captured by the British (1759), surrendered to the Americans after the Revolutionary War, and recaptured by the British (1813).

Its strategic location made control of the fort important to France, Great Britain, and the Iroquois Confederation, as well as, later, to the United States.
