Constructed in 1850-55, this is a monumental example of the villas that became popular in America as a result of architectural pattern books of the 1850s (in this case, W.H. Ranlett's THE ARCHITECT, Vol. I, Plate 32).

An unusually sophisticated villa for its rural Piedmont location.
