National Historic Landmark- Drake Oil Well

On August 27, 1859, Edwin L. Drake (1819-1880) struck oil here, the site of the world's first successful oil well.

Its establishment resulted in an oil boom that made the region the oil center of the United States for 25 years. (Now the Drake Well Memorial State Park.)
