National Historic Landmark - East End Historic District

Galveston was for many years the state's largest city, flourishing as a port, financial center and trading emporium. Many of its 19th century nabobs built impressive houses in the east end of the city. They include the ornate Bishop's Palace (1887-93) by Nicholas J. Clayton.
