National Historical Landmark-The First Bank of the United States

The proposal to charter this institution provoked the first great debate over strict as opposed to expansive interpretation of the Constitution.

The Congress and President Washington, by following Alexander Hamilton's proposal and chartering the bank, took the necessary first steps toward implementing a sound national fiscal policy.
