National Historic Landmark -Governors Island

From the time of the Revolution, Governors Island has been a major component of the coastal fortification system for the nation's largest harbor.

The present fortifications, Fort Jay, a square four bastioned fort, and Castle Williams, a circular casemated work, were erected as part of the second American System of fortification in the years preceding the War of 1812.

From 1978 to 1966 the island is served as a major Army administrative center, and from 1966 to 1997, as headquarters for the U.S. Coast Guard's Atlantic Area command.
