National Historic Landmark - James Hall Office

In this office, James Hall conducted the geological research which made him one of the country's best-known 19th-century geologists.

The expertise he showed in his 1830s survey of New York state led to other commissions in the fields of geology and paleontology.

Hall became the first president of the Geological Society of America and a charter member of the National Academy of Sciences.

His cohort, James Dwight Dana, lauded him by stating that without Hall, -the geological history of the North American continent would not have been written-.
