National Historic Landmark -Jean Hasbrouck House

Built in two stages -- a one-room house in 1694 that was enlarged in 1712 to become both home and store -- this stone structure survives as the best example of a 17th-century Flemish Colonial house in the country.

Jean Hasbrouck was a native of Calais and a member of a group of French Huguenots from Flanders and the Lower Rhine who settled in the New Paltz area.

The Hasbrouck House received a Save America's Treasures grant in 2003 to support the restoration of the building's north wall, which is close to structural collapse due to foundation failure.

The matching grant was for $250,000.

The architect and structural engineer have been hired and will prepare construction documents in the summer of 2004.
