National Historic Landmark - Lehner Mammoth-Kill Site
Located on the Lehner Ranch and excavated in 1955-56 by the Arizona State Museum, the site showed that about 11,000 years ago hunters, probably over a period of several months, killed and butchered nine immature mammoths which were watering at a creek then located here. Fragmentary remains of tapir, horse, and bison were also found at the site, and these animals may also have been trapped and killed by man. Radiocarbon dates for artifacts and bones from this site serve as a control for several scientific studies.
