The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings House was the home of the acclaimed writer and her first husband, Charles Rawlings, from 1928 to 1953. It was in this house that Rawlings wrote all seven of the books published during her lifetime, including The Yearling, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939. She was elected to the National Academy of Arts and Letters that same year. The rural community of Cross Creek was the wellspring of Rawlings's literary imagination. Her memoir, Cross Creek (1942), describes her house, the adjacent citrus grove and garden, and her interactions with the local people.
